This wonderful, beautifully-written book is a story of conflicting needs and wants and the resolution of those needs and wants makes for some fascinating reading. I adored this book and the characters in it. It seemed as if there was a treat on every page - lovely word pictures one right after another. The Duke of Wyverne needs to marry wealth, but wants the widowed Lady Caroline. Lady Caroline needs to be loved, but wants the Duke of Wyverne. Sounds like there should be no problem - but, of course there is. The Duke has a problem with loving another and Lady Caro will not consider his proposal without love. It seems the two share a history that goes back 11 years to before her marriage. This history starts out as a mystery that is slowly revealed as the story progresses. Lovely timing on the author's part. The Duke has psychological problems - social anxiety, panic issues, restless energy, and an aversion to being touched. In an age prior to ready diagnosis, his reputation for eccentricity has him lampooned as `Mad Michael.' I, for one, loved this Hero. And, clearly, so did Lady Caroline, although she had good reason not to. Having been involved in some mysterious scandal years ago, they haven't seen each other in 11 years, so it is a shock to them both when they again meet.Michael is awkward, nervous and reticent, but admits to Lady Caro his rather desperate need for a rapid infusion of money - hence, a wealthy wife. Lady Caro has been left a comfortable fortune, but insists upon her next relationship, if any, being a love match. Although she has clear grounds for wreaking revenge on Michael, who hurt her deeply in the past, she opts for a different path - which is what makes this book so absorbing. Her kindness to him - and her determination to assist him find a wife - and his gradual transformation - well, you just have to read this book!I love a wounded hero, and an emotionally wounded hero is especially intriguing. This author has done the most magnificent job of portraying the anxieties of this man! I have never read anything that comes even remotely close. It reminds me somewhat of the heroes in Song for Sophia by Densley, or London's Devil Takes a Bride - both of which I loved, but I think this is even better. The details are outstanding - just seems so entirely real. It is an uplifting, emotionally satisfying book with a perfectly sigh-worthy HEA.I couldn't close this review without adding that Chapter 13 is one of the most moving, terrifically romantic love scenes that I've encountered. Oh, my goodness, it was beautiful - perfectly done, in my book. I can't rate this book high enough, and I don't possess the skill to properly describe it, but it is simply lovely and I enjoyed every minute I spent reading it.
