Product Description

When the sheriff up and leaves the sleepy town of Savage Wells, Paisley Bell steps up and assumes the responsibility. But the town council decides that the position of sheriff should really go to a man, and Paisley finds herself fighting to prove that she's the perfect candidate for the job. Longtime lawman Cade O'Brien discovers that his biggest competition for a sheriff job in Savage Wells is a woman, and he begins to question his decisions. Tension between the two begins to sizzle as both Cade and Paisley realize the attraction they have for each other, but when Paisley's former beau shows up in town, along with a band of bank robbers, the blossoming relationship between the two sheriffs is tested.

I actually came at this book backwards, having read the second book first without realizing they were even connected. Book 2 was pretty good, but I absolutely loved this one - and I usually hate feminist flavored stories in my escapist fare. This one pulls it off to some extent because Paisley isn't trying to be sheriff out of some delusion that women can be men, but because she has her own knack for the job as a woman. So she still dresses like a woman, for example, but in a way that minimizes any hindrances as much as possible. And I liked that Cade respected her abilities, but didn't pretend that she could do the job without multiple handicaps not just from her gender but from stereotyped perceptions about her gender. The story is both serious and funny. The quirky townspeople were frequently just silly, but I found myself enjoying it anyway. This may well be my favorite story by this prolific author*Romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic
